Tue Aug 25 Depart your home city on overnight flight to Rome (with layover). Fly with the group** or on your own to arrive in Rome (FCO) between 10:00 - 11:00 am.
Wed Aug 26 This morning you will arrive in Rome - The Eternal City. We will take in a few iconic sights such as the Colosseum and the Forum. We won’t push too hard before we check into our lovely hotel the Michelangelo-Roma for the next 2 nights and enjoy our welcome dinner. We will get a good night’s rest to prepare for tomorrow’s adventure. (B, D)
Thur Aug 27 After breakfast we will embark on our exploration of Vatican City including St. Peter’s Basilica. If you wish, you can take an elevator up to the base of the dome, then climb the steps between the two layers of the dome designed by Michelangelo for stunning views from the cupola of Vatican City and Rome. We will visit the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Of course, you may have some free time to explore on your own or stay with the group for more sightseeing. We will stay a second night in our Rome hotel. (B)
Fri Aug 28 Depart Rome after breakfast for the rolling hills of Tuscany. Along the way we will make stops including the town of Siena, home of the Palio di Siena - their famous horse race in the center of town, a family owned winery and the Florence American Cemetery. We will continue north to the vibrant city of Florence, home to some of the greatest art and architecture in the world. After check-in you’ll have the rest of the afternoon and evening to explore and get dinner on your own at a local restaurant near our Hotel Paris. (B)
Sat Aug 29 Be prepared to see some of Italy’s most iconic sights today. We will see the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore whose dome was an architectural feat designed by famed Renaissance architect Brunelleschi. Will you climb the 463 steps to the cupola to see the panoramic views of Florence? We will marvel at the art in the Galleria dell’Accademia namely Michelangelo’s David. Other sites we’ll see are the Ponte Vecchio, Mercato Centrale - the historic food market and the many piazzas filled with incredible art. (B)
Sun Aug 30 Today we will continue north to the fascinating city of Milan which is home to the massive Duomo di Milano, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - one of the oldest shopping malls, countless museums filled with history and art. The Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie houses Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, “The Last Supper”. After our exploration of the city we will enjoy a group dinner at our historic hotel - Villa Malpensa. (B, D)
Mon Aug 31 Today's breathtaking drive along Lake Como will be very relaxing. The scenery is stunning as we make our way to the charming town of
Tirano. We will stop along the way for photos and lunch. This evening, take time to wander around this quaint town and get your last
Italian gelato after our group dinner. Our hotel is conveniently located a short walk from the train station. (B, D)
Tue Sept 1 The highlight of today will be our 4+ hour ride on the Bernina Express train from Tirano to Chur, Switzerland over the Alps. You’ll have some free time for lunch in this 5,000 year old town before we board our bus and head for our next stop in Bavaria, the lovely Garmisch- Partenkirchen (GaPa). Our home for the next 3 nights will be the beautiful Atlas Grand Hotel in the heart of town. (B)
Wed Sept 2 Today we will visit the stunning Neuschwanstein Castle where you will have time for a tour of the castle, lunch and shopping. After our excursion, we will head back to GaPa with plenty of time for you to walk the streets and take in this charming town. Tonight we will enjoy a group dinner at a traditional German pub with cultural dancing and music. (B, D)
Thur Sept 3 Calling all mountain climbers!! Today we will tackle the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak and home to one of the last glaciers in
Deutchland. Don’t worry, the glass gondola will safely transport you to the top where the observation deck made of glass and steel will
give you incredible views of the mountain range. Back in GaPa we will see the ski jump in Olympic Park and take an optional walk through
Partnach Gorge. Tonight is our final night to enjoy our wonderful hotel and a group dinner. Be sure to get down to the relaxing sauna - a real treat after coming down off the mountain! (B, D)
Fri Sept 4 Pack up this morning as we leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen (can you say it now?) and head to Munich - famous for its Bavarian cuisine. We will visit the Marienplatz rumored to be one of the most beautiful squares in all of Germany and home to the Glockenspiel. Get lunch at the iconic Hofbräuhaus - possibly the world’s most famous tavern. You will have time to explore historic cathedrals, palaces and gardens. Wander through the Viktualienmarkt with many stalls of Bavarian specialty foods. This evening we will check into our Munich city center accommodation - Hotel Schlicker for the next 3 nights. Perhaps we can catch a concert while we are here in one of the historic locations. (B)
Sat Sept 5 Today we will take a trip to Salzburg - the home of the Sound of Music! We will spend the whole day in this magical town. We'll visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress and the Altstadt historic town center - a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to Mozart’s birth house. We will also catch some of the familiar Sound of Music filming sites. Be sure to see the movie again before we go! We will drive back to our Munich hotel this evening. (B)
Sun Sept 6 Our day trip today will be to Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, a very moving experience and a powerful reminder of history that must never be forgotten. On our way back to Munich we will pass by the Olympic Stadium and the BMW factory and museum. You will have the rest of the day to enjoy your favorite sites in Munich, shop, taste the cuisine or just relax in this beautiful city! We will enjoy a farewell dinner all together and get ready to fly home tomorrow. (B,D)
